DIT How TO Brief #106 Natural Diamond Single
Point Dressing Tools

WHERE, WHEN AND HOW TO USE THEM!

Natural Diamond Octahedron single point dressing tools are "Trick Tools" in a positive fashion. They can open a grinding wheel so it can grind faster, aggressively, and cooler. They can also be used to condition the wheel to give better flatness, finishes, and tight tolerances. They are plentiful and economical.

You should buy First Quality Octahedron diamond tools which are resettable. Their cost is reasonable, as no other diamond tool is as flexible. Should the wrong wheel specification be used, a single point can compensate. Should the steel alloys change from soft steels to very hard steel, the single point can condition the same wheel so it will grind it. Clusters, hand set, random set, mesh, rolls, blocks, etc. have to match the application to optimize.

Therefore, for maximum flexibility, order First Quality Octahedrons. For consistant production applications use multiple natural diamond stone and mesh tools.

In all dressing applications, keep your infeeds below .001 maximum. Any heavier depth of dress will crush the bond posts of the wheel .006 to .018 deep into the wheel. The grits will then loosen and fall out. The wheel will again pack steel into the bigger gullets and the wheel will begin to chatter, bounce and burn.

The cycle will begin again with another heavy dressing procedure. Single point diamond dressing tools need to maintain a sharp point. Set the diamond single point shank at approximately 15 degrees. Index the tool 6 to 12 times per one revolution. Order your diamond single point tools with a hexagon head. This will be a visual aid for you. Try not to grind into the shank steel as the other corners of the octahedron can get damaged. Then they can't be reset. When grinding dry... dress dry. When grinding wet... dress wet.

Save a few diamond single point tools that have developed a flat large radius for finish and tight tolerance dressing. Keep your infeed down to .0002. Should you need to grind a 16 RMS or better finish, balance the grinding wheel. Use only real sharp single points to true and dress the sides of a grinding wheel. This will use a lighter pressure and the sides will be straighter. Radius out the corners with a piece of Boron Carbide unless the corner needs to be sharp.
